Dr. Norma Dunning is an Inuk poet, short story writer, researcher, scholar and professor at the University of Alberta. Her debut collection of stories, Annie Muktuk and Other Stories, won the Danuta Gleed Literary Award, the Howard O’Hagan Award and the Bronze Foreword INDIES Award for short stories. Her second book of stories, Tainna: The Unseen Ones, was praised for its “stunning and original stories” and won the 2021 Governor General’s Award for Fiction. Weaving Inuit mythology into the contemporary stories of six modern-day Inuk characters, the book explores such issues as loss, poverty, and racism, with Quill & Quire calling it “powerful and dazzling.” Dunning is also the author of the Alberta bestseller Eskimo Pie: A Poetics of Inuit Identity, with another poetry collection, Akia: The Other Side, due out this July.
