This year’s authors have earned numerous accolades for their debut novels.
Cedar Bowers’ “beautifully written” novel, Astra, revolves around the titular character gradually revealed through multiple narratives told by the people in her life, leaving readers to wonder: can we truly know someone? Astra was shortlisted for the 2022 Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, longlisted for the Giller Prize, and named a Best Book of the Year by The Globe and Mail and CBC Books.
Francesca Ekwuyasi’s novel Butter Honey Pig Bread made her a “new and exciting voice” when it landed on many “best of” lists. Centred on the fractured relationships between sisters and mother, the novel interweaves family trauma, food and Nigerian folklore, and was a finalist for numerous awards including the Giller Prize and the Governor General’s Literary Award.
